I am using MAME 1.67, found this link and downloaded the xml file and I get a list of games.
I am still working on getting the art work to appear.

Finally had time to go bet back to this.
Apparently when I clicked "Create database", I was not opting to build it from existing ROMs.
As a result the database was blank.
I am now able to see a list.

During my install it did appear that it was taking a very very very long time but then I noticed the DirectX install window in the background behind some other windows.
